Besides four peeths, there are four other peeths which are recognized as Shankar Peeths by the Government and the people of India. These are Kachikamkoti Peeth in the South; the Sumeru Kashi peeth in the East, the Karveer Kohlapur Peeth in the West and Bhanpura Peeth in Central India.
Of these, the Bhanpura Peeth enjoys a special status as it was the headquarters of Jyotirmath during the British rule in India. It was during the Mughal rule that the headquarters of Jyotirmath was transferred to Dholka in Gujrat. In 1901 The celebrated Bombay High Court gave a verdict in favour of Jyotirmath established at Dholka from Badrikaasharma against the pettion filled by Dwaika Peeth against Jyotirmath at Dholka. Even though he won the litigation filed against him by Dwarika peeth the then Shankracharya of Jyotirmath stationed at Dholka His Holiness Swami Vishweswaranand Giri transferred the muth to Bhanpura as he did not want to embrass the Dwarika Swami because of his saintly nature. Moreover the Holkars the then rulers oh Indore State offered Place , Land & resources to the saint. Nearly 20 princily houses of Malwa and Rajputana gave emmence support to the Peeth at Bhanpura. Bhanpura had been the religious and cultural capital of the Holkars.Bhanpura thus became the headquarters of the Jyotirmath and enjoyed the status till 1940 when the peeth was revived at Jyosimath in Himalayas and Bhanpura was recognized as a subordinate peeth to the Jyosimath by all the leading saints of the time.
His Holiness Sri Shankaracharya Swami Divyanand Teerthji is the eleventh successor of the Dholka-Bhanpua Peeth . He endeavours to retain the glory of the peeth.
